How to Nail Your First Meeting With a New Client - The Muse
How to Nail Your First Meeting With a New Client - The MuseHow to Nail Your First Meeting With a New Client Client relationships can make or break a business- and a career. If you work with clients already, you know that establishing mutual respect and a good working relationship should be your number one priority. And if you are just departureing out with clients, youll learn this very quickly. The first meeting with a new client? Well, thats the first thing that can make or break the relationship. Whether youve just been assigned to an existing project or youre getting down to business with a newly closed client, its important to impress from day one. After years in the PR world, here are five things I always keep in mind.1. Do Your Research BeforehandJust like you would go into an interview with a solid understanding of the company, you should go into your first client meeting with at least some baseline knowledge about your client and his or her business. Obviously you cant know everything- and the client should understand that you are just jumping in- but the more youre able to showcase your knowledge of the industry and business, the better. departure by knowing how to pronounce the company and client names, and even top competitors just in case. Have an understanding of your clients stance in the industry and any successes and struggles the company has faced. You can often find this out by doing some research online ahead of time. Google your client contact, the company, and the industry- and be sure to check out the news section for any trends. Articles can reveal so much about a company, including its stance in an industry. If this client has worked with others in your company before (or has worked with other people in your network), learn what you can from them. Is there anything especially unique about this client? Does he or she have any likes or dislikes that your colleagues have picked up on? Any tips for working better together? These nuances dont have to be obvious they can also be the smallest, most ridiculous things. For example, one of my clients doesnt like contractions (or should I say, does not like contractions). Its a tiny pet peeve, but knowing this helps me avoid annoying someone right away. Finally, its worth doing a little research to learn seemingly unimportant details about the person youll be meeting with. Did you go to the same university? Have similar hobbies? It may not be related to your work together at all, but weaving these tidbits into the initial conversation can build a great rapport. 2. Be Upfront About Your Experience and CapabilitiesA clients main concerns will be your skills and knowledge- are you the right one to help with this work? Most likely, you will be presented with an opportunity to introduce yourself and give a little background, and this is a chance to address these experiences up front. Remember You were chosen to work with this client for a reason, so dont be afraid to show off what youve got.Not sure what to say during your intro? After stating your name, this template is a good place to start Great to meet you For your background, Ive worked in role for more than number years and have worked with around number companies. Im excited to be working in the industry type industry again- I actually worked with a example of company at a previous agency. This doesnt need to be longer than a couple sentences- you dont want to seem like youre trying too hard- and be sure to round it out with a reason why youre excited to be working with together. 3. Listen and AdaptOnce youve had a chance to introduce yourself, sit back and listen. Even in the first conversation, you should be picking up on what matters most to the client and what he or she wants your role to be. Should your meetings be focused on work and the task at hand or more about getting to know one another? Should you be asking questions to prompt more conversation or reigning in a conversation that loses focus? Should you interject recommendations throughout the meeting or listen entirely before coming back with your thoughts?Be prepared to adapt no matter what the case is. Mirroring your clients sentiment and body language will help with your first impression, while noting and adapting to these will help in all of your future interactions.4. Ask Questions and Take NotesEveryone loves to feel like an expert and be sought out for expertise. Based on your prior research, ask relevant questions about the client and his or her business. This relationship is new, and now is the best time to gather as much information as possible. Your questions shouldnt be so basic that a little research would have already addressed them (e.g., What is your companys main service?) and should focus more on overarching trends, like the direction of the business or industry. Try questions like What are your companys biggest challenges? What trends are seeing in this industry? And, of course, make sure youre takin g thorough notes. Also, if your client is looking for a more personal relationship, feel free to also ask questions about family life or outside interests. Once again, take notes. Knowing about a clients upcoming holiday plans, family, or even preference between tea and coffee could be of use in the future.5. Follow Up QuicklyA quick email after your introduction will provide the client with your contact information, give you the opportunity to reinforce your eagerness to be working together, and allow you to reiterate any action items that came out of your meeting. This can be a very brief note. Hi Name,Thank you for the thermisch welcome earlier this weekIm excited to be working with you and the Company Name team. If you have any questions, please dont hesitate to contact me. You can find my contact information below. You will be hearing from me shortly to set up our first status meeting.Thank you,Your NameIf possible, now is a good time to make your role clear to the client. If yo ure the point person from now on, mention that in your email so that there is no confusion moving forward. With a great first impression, your relationship with the client will be off to a running start. You can look forward to establishing a good working relationship and diving into the good stuff- the work.

Calling It Quits on Your Internship
Calling It Quits on Your InternshipCalling It Quits on Your InternshipShould you leave aninternship? Although my opinion is usually that unless it includes the following 4 criteria, I recommend that if at all possible, a current intern should try to stay with the internship for the experience it provides, the ability to make professional connections, and a chance to include relevant experience on their resume. Since I believe there are some good lessons in the scenario, I thought Id write about it so that people in similar circumstances (including jobs they cant stand) can evaluate when its time to call it quits on their internship or job. Intern Question Now, my question is, three months of leid really experiencing what I expected and talking about it with the CEO more than once and things not improving, is it time for me to call it quits or stick around HOPING things will get better? And if I should stick it out, how long should I stick around knowing that the other offer may d isappear after January? In this case, I think the writer makes some excellent points on why leaving this internship would not be a badthing. First off, this person is a graduate student who had a job and welches making decent money with great benefits only to leave and pursue what they thought would be their dream job once they completed their training which took form by doing an internship. For someone seeking a future job and looking to get exposure to the entertainment field in LA, taking this job sounded like an excellent idea. But over the course of the past 2 months, this internship has proven to be a nightmare. First off, many of the promises that were made at the time of the interview were not followed through by the employer. The applicant was seeking excitement in the next job along with a decent salary, benefits, a good working environment, and a chance to grow within the company. To make the situation more complicated, the applicant was also interviewing for another comp any that seemed amazing, but it didnt offer the glitz and glamour of working with celebrities on a daily basis, so they ended up putting that job on hold. They decided to take the internship because it was paid, it promised some glitz and glamour, and had the potential to work into a full-time job once the internship was over. To the interns despair, the pay was quite low and did not increase significantly only after some discussions and then again after taking on the role of personal assistant when the full-time employee was fired. Come to find out 2 previous employees doing this same job were also fired. They have had 10 interns over the course of the past 2 years and only 3 employees on the payroll. As the personal assistant, the employee is now bored with the job running the office, and the actress that they work directly with is a lot of work. There have been promises of future commissions once events take place, but theres been nothing mentioned about training on how to be suc cessful once a commission structure has been put into place. The student is currently struggling with low pay and having trouble making ends meet while living in LA. Staying in a bad internship while struggling financially is probably not a good idea in this case, especially since the learning seems to be minimal with a non-existent growth path. Dilemma The writers Dad thinks the student should do what they think is best, but Mom wants the student to stay because she feels that the student has a prestigious title and theres a possibility that things will get better. While the reader is feeling quite used and upset because the company has not lived up to its promises and there appears to be no growth potential with the company. If youd like to let us know what you think, please join us on the Forum to see my response and let us know if you think this student should stay or leave their internship.

The goal is to have a different - and better - resume than everyone else.Interviewers tend to ask the same questions of all candidates. Its not that theyre lazy. They really do want to hire the best person. Using the same questions just keeps them from veering off script. It also allows them to make more objective comparisons between interviewees. Should You Take the Job When You Only Have One Offer
Should You Take the Job When You Only Have One OfferShould You Take the Job When You Only Have One OfferIf you only have one job offer, how do you decide whether to accept or decline? There is no universally correct answer to this difficult decision. Rather, the answer varies on a case by case basis. First off, you have an offer congratulations. A company is impressed enough that it thinks you would add value, which is a testament to your skills and abilities. To accept or not to accept? That is the question. How do you decide? The best tool you can utilize in your decision-making process is a pro and con list that will invite self-reflection. Write these thoughts on paper, as opposed to keeping them in your head. Now is the time to consider your motives, goals, likes and dislikes, as well as your career path. For many individuals, this deliberation process is easier said than done. To jump start your brainstorming process, consider the following questions. Will the position be advanta geous for your career goals and intended path? What are the pros and cons?Hypothetically, if you had another offer, would you still choose this one? More importantly, why would this offer be your choice?Do you need to find a job immediately to ensure your survival and well-being?Will you put forth your best effort in the role?Do your teamberaterin and coworkers seem like people you could envision yourself spending time with and learning from? Are there any red flags?Have you written down your answers? Okay, good.Accept the offer ifYou are excited about the company or role.Receiving a job offer is a reason to celebrate, especially if it is a company and role that you could see yourself enjoying. Research the company and role to understand if you could thrive in the environment. If you are enthusiastic about the offer and role, there is no reason to have commitment-phobia.If you had multiple offers, you would still choose this opportunity. If you had multiple offers, you would be weighi ng them against one another. However, receiving a single offer should not change your thought process. Play devils advocate and hypothesize. If you had another offer, would you still choose this one? More importantly, what is your rationale that would lead you to accept this offer. What criteria does this position meet compared to your ideal job?Your survival is dependent on it.If you absolutely cannot live without an immediate source of income for a few months, your well-being and livelihood are of utmost importance. While you will most likely find a job that is a good fit, life is uncertain, and this process could take a few months.Decline the offer ifYou arent passionate or excited about the role or company. If you are going to spend your days in the office daydreaming about working for another company, youd be better off declining the offer than pursuing a role that you are not truly passionate about. You are taking the place of another individual who would have truly dedicated h im or herself. If you accept the offer, the company deserves your best effort to excel in the role and will expect you to be excited to be there. It is not fair to you or them if you are pining over what could have been. You feel like youre settling. You never know when a company could reach out or where an opportunity could be waiting. You shouldnt feel like youre settling when you accept an offer. You dont want to begin a new job feeling resentful or disappointed. These feelings are not an equation for success in your role or for your future. If you feel like you would quickly jump ship as soon as you received a better offer, save yourself and the company some time and decline the offer. There are red flags. Is there a reason to give you pause like extremely low compensation or company horror stories? Do not ignore red flags simply because you need a job.You hastily accept in a panic. The worst possible scenario is that you panic and accept a position in haste. If you dont think the jo b is a good match, it may be best to forego it and wait for other possible offers. Some people, especially recent graduates and younger job seekers, forget that finding a job and accepting an offer doesnt mean the hard work is over. You actually have to work at the company and spend many hours of your day promoting the companys mission. If you think the role will be a bad fit, it could be worth waiting to find an opportunity that could be a better match.Accepting a position is not a decision you should make an hour after receiving your offer. At the least, you should dedicate a few days of careful consideration because a new role is a significant step in your life. Be realistic about whether you would be truly happy in the role and whether it would be a step in the right direction for your career. Consulting with trusted mentors or friends for advice can be a useful tactic, but you are the one who will be working at the company, and you should trust your judgement. The only correct answer is the one that is best for you.

What is resignation letter
What is resignation letterWhat is resignation letterWhat is resignation letterWell, you should expect a lot of explanation from different schools of thoughts, however, from my own understanding, it is a letter addressed to your employer indicating your intention to terminate your current employment. The importance of resignation letter requires some good thinking before you start resume writing. The main idea behind the resignation letter is to retain the well being and good feelings towards your former employer. The best part of this is that even though you are writing the resignation letter your opportunities of finding some great work are leise open and you should treat both yourself and the employer with respect and courtesy.the courtesy of T.Menzi unsplash.comGuidelines for wiring a flaw free resignation letter to show a good intention. The resignation should be drafted carefully. Take your time to write these components each with care and consideration. The four elements that can make up the resignation letter includeAnnouncement of resignation,A brief reason of resignation,Statement of appreciationFurther assistance intentionThe letter should sound more confident of the decision you made and the consideration that you might have considered. It should elend be seen as the way out to avoid the termination. The announcement of the resignation is the first thing you should include in the letter this is a quick approach to give a clear intent of future course of action too. That said, the letter should always be written after due consideration and if there is still a chance of working in the same office and there is no good opportunity in view, just keep the idea of resigning in your mind not on the paper to be on the safe side. The reason for resignation should be clearly given, this need not include the names of the future job prospects in full just a brief idea that this was a good enough reason for you to leave. Not always but there are some situations where you might have to leave the job in some unpleasant circumstances. This, however, does not mean that you should part in bad terms also. Whatever the reason might be the formal courtesy should be maintained, this is not only for the sake of some previous pleasant experience but also a good practice that will help you in obtaining a good reference and work experience letter too.Another vital part of the resignation letter that most people tend to overlook is the inclusion of the resume. Many people assume that employers are only interested in their resume only when they want to hire them which is untrue. You need to attach a neatly written resume for the employer to go through and see what the company has contributed to your career development and also what they might miss from you. You should note that a resume gives a brief description about you, and that is what the employer wants, not just long story in your resignation letter trying to justify your act. A resume can also serve as a point of reference in the future should there be a reason to.In conclusion, the intention being willing to provide assistance in future is a formal offer that should always be included too, the reason here is that the employer should be given the proper time to hand over. There should be adequate time for them to find the suitable replacement. These little courtesies should keep a good communication and respect.

Robotic Self Starters
Robotic Self Starters Robotic Self Starters Robotic Self Starters Machine-intelligence startup Osaro of San Francisco aims to slash the time and skill needed to train industrial robots. Manufacturers will use the in-house-developed operating system to teach robots how to take their own actions toward human-set goals. In other words, industrial robots learn from their human mentors, then keep learning on their own thanks to the softwares algorithms. In a move that differs from the aim of other San Francisco startups (in late 2015, Osaro received $3.3 million in seed-rounding funding from some big names in computer software), the company plans to one day offer machine learning for industrial robots, which will allow manufacturers to perform more nimbly by reducing the time they spend training robots, says Derik Pridmore, Osaros president. The company plans to offer its artificial intelligence, machine learning operating system to industrial robot manufacturers and their customers in 2017. Why the focus on robotic training? Industrial robots arent flexible. They need to be programmed, and then they go on to perform programmed actions by rote. Imagine the cost and time savings that can come from industrial robots that teach themselves, he says. Osaro also wanted to put the operating system to work on a current problem, rather than within a developing robotics industry such as for drones or small robots that perform household duties. Industrial manufacturing robots can now teach themselves how to perform according to human goals. Robotic Training Today, a skilled technician can spend weeks reprogramming an assembly-line robot, Pridmore says. His companys software should reduce that time to less than one week and help technicians program robotics that can cope on the fly with common manufacturing issues such as components that change shape and lines that change speeds. The technician trains the robot a few times on how to complete a task. The technician then scores the robot on success of failure at the task. Using those scores, the robot begins training itself, he says. Rather than a technician telling a robot what to do, it figures it out on its own. This type of machine learning is particularly useful in environments that change over time, such as a manufacturing plant, Pridmore adds. The companys artificial intelligence operating system takes a deep learning approach that involves feeding the program large quantities of data to train it to make inferences based on new data. The system further blends deep learning with reinforcement learning, that is, teaching machines how to carry out certain functions through trial and error, Pridmore says. Deep learning and deep reinforcement learning are two techniques that fall under the broad heading of machine learning, which is allowing algorithms to learn from data. Quick Learner Not only can robots powered by the Osaro operating system teach themselves, they are quick learners as well. The companys artificial intelligence system can pick up a game 100 times faster than Google DeepMind, Pridmore says. In December 2013, Google DeepMind showcased its artificial intelligence system that learns how to play video games similar to the way humans learn. The system mastered seven Atari 2600 games in a matter of hours and could outperform some of the best human players. In March 2016, AlphaGo, a Google DeepMind program that learns to play the game Go, won in four to one rounds against Lee Se-dol, the worlds second-ranked professional Go player. With that kind of speed, the Osaro operating systems training process should be straightforward and effortless, Pridmore says. In the future, manufacturers will be able to show a robot a few parts, a finished product, and tell them to get to work on part assembly, he says. The Osara machine learning system is certainly a step beyond robotic arms like that from Universal Robot, of Denmark, which is itself a move beyond the type of commonly programmed industrial robots mostly seen today. In contrast to traditional industrial robots, the Universal Robots stay hardwired inside safety enclosures. As they run on electricity, they can be moved from site to site within a factory and can be reprogrammed, often by the person who had been doing the job the robot is set to take over, within minutes, says Scott Mabie, general manager of Universal Robots Americas Division. A plant employee can quickly program the arm to perform a relatively simple, repetitive task, Mabie says. With robots like these in the pipeline, Pridmore and Mabie expect manufacturers to slash set-up and production times, decrease downtime, and increase their bottom lines in the process. Jean Thilmany is an independent writer. Industrial robots learn from their human mentors, then keep learning on their own thanks to the softwareâs algorithms.Derik Pridmore, president, Osaro

Two Surefire Ways to Deal With Interview Nerves
Two Surefire Ways to Deal With Interview Nerves Two Surefire Ways to Deal With Interview Nerves If you worry and stress about interviews, it helps to look at it from the other side of the desk. I have been an interviewer many, many times in my life and I can tell you that weâre nowhere near as frightening as you might think. There are two things to keep in mind that will help you stave off those interview nerves. They are: The interviewer wants you to succeed as much as you do Most managers hate hiring. They have lots of demands on their time, and interviewing is just one more thing pulling them away from what they see as their core responsibilities. They also hate it because itâs a chance to mess up. Itâs very hard to judge people on the basis of just one meeting, and if they make the wrong choice they will pay for it down the road. This applies to HR people too. They have lots of other things to do besides screening interviews, and a lot of other positions to fill. So the whole process is something theyâd rather get over with as quickly as possible. This means that each interviewer is actively rooting for your success. If you are the right candidate the manager can get back to his job! So donât be intimidated by interviews. The interviewer doesnât want to trip you up. In fact, she wants you to do well. Remember that when nerves start to rear their ugly heads. An interview is not a test Part of what makes us feel nervous about interviewing is the fact that we feel we are being tested and we will either pass or fail. We are applying for a job and we fear we may be rejected. But you can take a lot of pressure off yourself if you think of the interview as a chance to determine whether the job is the right fit for you and a chance for the employer to do the same. There will be lots of jobs out there that are not right for you. The hours wonât be right. The location wonât be right. The industry wonât be right. The job duties wonât suit you. There are also many jobs that you wonât be right for. You wonât have the right skill set, or your personality wonât be a good fit for the culture, or any number of other reasons. It isnât a reflection on you when this happens- none of us can be a perfect match with every job or company- it just means it was not the right opportunity for you. If you approach every interview as a chance for both parties to assess the fit, it eases the pressure greatly and makes it much more likely that youâll make a good impression. Good luck and happy interviewing!

Salary Negotiation - How to Get a Better Offer or Raise
Salary Negotiation - How to Get a Better Offer or Raise Salary Negotiation - How to Get a Better Offer or Raise Salary negotiation is probably not high on anyones list of enjoyable activities. However, if you ever want to earn what you deserve, it is essential to learn how to do it the right way. These dos and donts of negotiating job offers and raises will help you get the best salary possible. Dont Look at How Much Money Your Friends Are Making: You may be envious of your friends and acquaintances who have higher salaries, but many factors make it hard to compare. Most importantly, do they work in your field? Earnings vary by occupation- some pay more and others pay less. Where they live and work may make a difference too. If your friends live in a large metropolitan area with a higher cost of living and you do not, they may earn more money. More experience, greater responsibilities, or less desirable hours may also account for higher earnings. Benefits packages and paid vacation time or sick leave come into play too. Look at your entire compensation package when comparing salaries. Do Research Salaries in Your Field: Because salaries vary so much by occupation, find out what the median earnings are for yours before beginning salary negotiations. Look at recent salary surveys, talk to people who work in your field, and contact your trade or professional association to find out how much others are earning for doing the same job. Remember to go local when looking at those numbers. Salaries vary by region. Use the Occupation Profile tool on CareerOneStop.org, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor, to search by keyword and location. Do Consider Your Work Experience: Are you a novice or have you been working in your field for a while? Experience counts! In most cases, your salary will increase the longer you work in an occupation. During your salary negotiation, dont neglect to discuss the amount of time you have been working. Be realistic, though. Your bargaining power will be limited until you become more experienced in your field.Dont Talk About How Much Money You Need: When you are going through salary negotiations, dont tell your boss (or future boss) that you need to make more money because your bills are high, your house was expensive, or your child is starting college. While these concerns are all valid reasons for needing more money and may have even been the motivation for trying to negotiate your salary in the first place, it is irrelevant to your boss. The only time to bring up your expenses is when your employer is relocating your job to a region that has a higher cost of living and is not offering a salary that takes that into account. Do Talk About the Salary You Deserve: Your salary is based on what you have done or will do to benefit your employer. That includes increasing profits, keeping costs down, or building a customer base. When presenting your case for getting a raise from your current boss, highlight any accomplishments that contributed to growing your employers bottom line. If you are negotiating a job offer with a potential employer, discuss what you will do to earn the salary you are asking for, using examples of accomplishments in prior jobs. Do Be Flexible: When negotiating your salary, it is essential to realize going in, that the final number your boss gives you may be less than what you initially desired. Before beginning, decide how much you are willing to compromise and what you will do if your boss or potential boss doesnt offer a salary that is acceptable to you. Will you start looking for a new job? Will you turn down the job offer? Would you be less disappointed if the employer gave you something other than more money? If so, ask for something to sweeten the deal, like additional vacation time or other fringe benefits. Even if you didnt achieve your original goal of a higher salary, at least you wont feel defeated. And remember, you can always try again.

How to Fix a Poor Performing Team at Work
How to Fix a Poor Performing Team at Work How to Fix a Poor Performing Team at Work Letâs face it, not every workplace team achieves a high level of performance. Some limp along to the finish line of an initiative where exhausted team members metaphorically crash to the ground like so many weekend warriors just barely completing a mini-triathlon. On other teams, members rush to complete their work out of sheer desire to end the pain of working with one or more coworkers whom they hope to never again encounter. When the conditions on your team take a turn for the worse, itâs time for extraordinary action. First. lets look at the reasons for a poor group dynamic in the first place. It Starts With the Dreaded Classroom Group Project For many of us, our immediate negative reaction to the idea of working on a team goes back to our school days. Ask people about their best and worst teaming experiences and those in the latter category tend to describe those nightmarish college group project initiatives where five people were thrust together on a grade-impacting activity and only two or three did any of the work. Their stories typically sound like this: Two of us worked through the night to finish up the project and get ready for the presentation. The one person who missed every single group meeting showed up on the day of the presentation to claim his grade. The one who argued with us every step of the way presented something unrelated to our project. And our friend, the social loafer, failed to deliver on every single task she committed to completing. It was a nightmare. When the teaming activities in the workplace begin to feel like one of those bad project experiences, both moral and performance plummet. Teams Are the Engines of Workplace Creation As managers, we depend upon teams to innovate, execute strategy, plan events and do just about everything else that is new and unique in our organizations. We live and work in a world of projects and every manager regardless of title is at some point a project manager. It is imperative that we learn to cultivate teams that perform with a minimum of drama and controversy. Nonetheless, wherever humans gather in groups, drama, disagreement, and controversy will emerge. When your team fails to cultivate the chemistry that leads to performance or, when the environment turns toxic, there are a number of actions the manager or team leader can take to get the group back on a positive footing.? 5 Ideas to Help Rescue Your Toxic Team Here are five ideas to help you debug your toxic team and get the group back on track for high performance. 1. Resist the urge to point figures. Instead, focus first on the group. You might have some idea that a particular personality is the root cause of your teamâs problems, however, focusing on an individual too early in the recovery process will only add to the toxic environment. While a few team members might be happy to be rid of this particular personality, others will wonder if theyâre next. Instead of cultivating trust, you will be endangering it. 2. Define or revisit team values. Savvy team leaders work hard at the front-end of a new teaming initiative to discuss and solicit ideas on key values for the team. These values focus on important issues such as: Accountability for actions and living up to commitments.Shared accountability for the groupâs success.Expectations for performance and communication. How the team will navigate difficult decisions. How the team will deal with differences of opinion. How the team members will support each other. If the values topic was not covered by team formation, it is time to conduct that discussion. Use this as an opportunity for the team to clear the air of prior problems. Use the problems around issues and tasks as examples and challenge team members to identify how they will be handled now that the values are clearly stated. Resist the urge to focus on personality or interpersonal dynamics and focus instead on tasks and processes. 3. Clarify roles and responsibilities. A great many team problems arise when roles and responsibilities are unclear. Ask everyone to craft their own unique ârole description,â and then pass it out to team members to review and critique. Revise the description until the team agrees and post all of the descriptions in a common area for easy reading and reference. 4. Ask the team to critique you. Many of us are quick to look outside ourselves and blame external circumstances for our problems. Researchers call this the fundamental attribution error. Conscientious team leaders and managers recognize that their behaviors may be adversely impacting team performance and chemistry. Often, team members hesitate to offer feedback and constructive criticism to the person in charge. Cure this by crafting a survey that allows team members to share their views on your performance and behaviors. Let them submit the survey anonymously and make certain to summarize and share the feedback- good and bad- and then commit to specific improvements. 5. Take action on social loafers or toxic team members. After you have taken the above steps and if problems persist, you should begin looking at potential problem team members. If you have been doing your job and observing team member interaction and performance, you are armed with the fundamentals of good feedback: behavioral observations. Offer feedback and ask for a commitment to behavior improvements. Be as specific as possible. Highlight the business implications of adverse behaviors and indicate that the individual is accountable for improvements. If those improvements happen, great. If not, take steps to remove the individual from the team. The Bottom-Line Ideally, you should take the time to establish values, clarify roles and define expected behaviors at the beginning of the teaming process. However, if those steps were skipped and your team is not performing acceptably, it is incumbent upon you as the leader or manager to call a timeout and tackle these building blocks of high performance.

Law Enforcement Auxiliary and Reserve Programs
Law Enforcement Auxiliary and Reserve Programs Law Enforcement Auxiliary and Reserve Programs Have you always wanted to work in law enforcement, but didnt think it was right for you? Perhaps you didnt think youd earn enough money. Maybe you were worried about the shift work. Or perhaps you werent sure where to start or how to get your foot in the door. A great way to get your feet wet in law enforcement is to serve as an auxiliary or reserve officer. Best of Both Worlds For any number of reasons, working full time in law enforcement may not be practical for everyone. Still, there are many more people who are drawn to the profession than are able to work in it. Fortunately, you may not have to choose between careers. Many law enforcement agencies offer part-time and volunteer opportunities to augment their forces, giving you an opportunity to serve in a way and at a time that works better for you. Citizens on Patrol Auxiliary and reserve officer programs are made up of citizens who have received specialized training in order to assist full-time officers. Reserve Officers Reserve officers are, often, retired members of the police force who have full police standards, training, and powers. They either volunteer their time or are paid on a part-time basis. They may be tasked with taking calls for service or patrol and are often expected to perform all of the same duties of full-time officers. Auxiliary Officers Auxiliary officers are typically volunteer forces who receive modified police training. They may be allowed to perform some law enforcement tasks independently, such as assisting motorists and investigating crashes. They are also called upon to help enhance security operations and traffic control at events such as football games and other major functions. Training and Work Environments for Reserve Officers To work as a reserve officer, generally, you must have attended a police academy and passed the accompanying state certification or POST exam. Some agencies may require that you previously worked full time, while others may hire you as a reservist straight out of the academy. Some departments pay their reserve officers on a part-time basis. Many work full time in other professions and choose to perform reserve work simply because they enjoy it. Others retired from law enforcement or resigned to pursue other opportunities. They work as reservists on the weekends to stay sharp and connected to the profession they loved. Getting Your Foot in the Door Still, others begin their careers as reserve officers, in the hopes that they will be hired as full-time officers in the future. For these individuals, the reserve program can offer a great opportunity to gain contacts and to give employers a chance to see what they are all about. Working as a reserve officer, even in a volunteer capacity, is a great way to ?land a full-time job in law enforcement. Training and Work Environments for Auxiliary Officers Working as an auxiliary officer usually requires a modified law enforcement training curriculum that incorporates full training in firearms, first aid, defensive tactics, and vehicle operations, as well as abbreviated training in other areas determined to be essential to their duties. Auxiliary officers often differ from reserve officers in that they may not have full police power or authority. Instead, they most often operate under the supervision and in the presence of a full-time officer. Auxiliary officers work alongside full-time police officers, often riding with them to provide an extra pair of eyes and to enhance officer safety. No Choice Necessary Auxiliary and reserve police officer programs offer a great opportunity to get your feet wet in law enforcement without the need to quit your day job. For those who have always wanted to work in law enforcement but, for whatever reason, were unable to make a full-time career out of it, these programs provide a way to fulfill an otherwise unrealized dream. Benefits of Reserve and Auxiliary Police Programs Working as either an auxiliary or reserve officer is a wonderful way to get your foot in the door and land a full-time law enforcement career further on down the road. Whether youre just starting out in your career and are looking for a way to gain contacts and experience or youre just looking for an opportunity to serve on a part-time basis, becoming a reserve or auxiliary police officer may be the perfect opportunity for you.

How to Finally Start Leaving Work on Time
How to Finally Start Leaving Work on Time How to Finally Start Leaving Work on Time In a fast-paced, competitive work environment, it can be a challenge simply to walk out the office door on time. Whenever 5 p.m. rolls around, it feels like theres still more work to be done. You certainly dont want to fall behind or look bad compared to your coworkers who are laboring late into the night, and you definitely want your boss to see you as a hard-working team player. However, a healthy personal life is just as important to your overall well-being as a successful professional life is. Furthermore, finding a consistent way to leave the office on time can actually combat burnout, give you more time to recharge, and make you more productive when you return to work the next day. In short, clocking out on time can make you a better worker, not a less dedicated one - provided youre getting done everything that needs to get done. Here are a few tips to help you get the most out of your workday so you can leave at 5 p.m. every evening - without feeling guilty: 1. Learn to Prioritize Your Work You cant have a truly effective, highly productive workday without first learning how to prioritize your work. When you know which tasks on your to-do list are most important and most impactful, you can plan out your day to ensure the work that matters most always gets done. Getting the most important tasks done at the beginning of the day, when you are fresh and energized, can make a world of difference to your productivity. Most of us know the afternoon slump well. Saving your high-priority tasks for later in the day will only make those tasks harder to accomplish. That, in turn, leads to more late nights. Need help prioritizing your tasks? Try using the Eisenhower matrix method. 2. Exercise Technology Discipline Do you find yourself browsing social media during work? This is probably slowing you down and consuming valuable time that could be spent on getting those high-priority tasks off your plate. If you limit your distractions at work, you can increase your productivity during regular work hours and minimize overtime. Its a simple equation, really: The more time you spend actually working during the day, the less time youll have to spend making up for lost work hours during the evening. If you need help keeping your social media urges in check, explore mobile apps that are designed to reduce digital distractions and keep you on track. A couple Ive found useful are OFFTIME and Moment, which help coach you away from your phone through time tracking, app blocking, and communication filters. 3. Leave Your Desk More These days, most communication happens through email. Just because its common, however, doesnt mean its effective. Weve all had the experience of wanting to finish a crucial task but not being able to because were still waiting on vital details or resources from a collaborator. Sometimes, the better option is to get up, take a walk, and have a face-to-face conversation to get things moving and save precious time that would otherwise be spent sitting around and waiting for a response. Get to know the key players on the different teams with which you work so you can go to the right people with the right questions when necessary. When it comes to collaborators outside your organization, try picking up the phone instead of typing yet another email. 4. Establish a Wrap-Up Routine Give yourself 20 minutes at the end of each day to tie up loose ends. Use this time to review the to-do list you made at the beginning of the day. Is there anything else that needs to get done before you head out? Any finishing touches you have to put on your tasks? By setting aside a chunk of time to wrap up your daily activities, you not only give yourself the peace of mind to leave work for the day, but you also set yourself up to come in the next morning and get right back to business.
